In 2016, as part of a cultural mission between the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, we traveled to Cuba to create art in a shared studio environment. The sculptural piece that emerged from this exchange was a raw, site-responsive installation made entirely from found cardboard and a single bottle of ink. Influenced by visits to the syncretic religious centers of Regla—led by artist Felipe Dulzaides—and shaped through conversations with local cultural ambassadors, the work fused elements of graffiti and ephemeral sculpture, drawing from the textures of the city and its layered histories. Both an act of improvisation and a meditation on material scarcity, the piece was later exhibited at the Diego Rivera Gallery at SFAI and in Dulzaides’s own Havana studio, embodying the spirit of cross-cultural dialogue and resourceful expression.
